One thing that looking for a new web host has taught me is the difference between linux web hosting and windows web hosting. I never really understood the difference before despite having been paying for web hosting since the mid 1990s – I always just assumed that windows would be better as that is what my home PC runs on and I am familiar with so whenever I had an option I’d always go with windows hosting.
For one thing Linux being open source often means it is a lot cheaper to maintain and is generally more stable and reliable than windows hosting. Windows hosting has the ability to run certain scripts and programs that linux does not such as Access, ASP, MS SQL.
So if I ever get the choice again I will opt for linux hosting now I think rather than windows. I really should have took 5 minutes to learn that a long time ago!
When you need a new web hosting provider it can be a bit of a nightmare, where do you even start in looking for one?
I am glad that I am happy with my webhost at the moment, I have moved several times over the years and hated it every single time – I have been with my current host for almost two years now and so far so good. There has been a few minor issues along the way but I think that’s to be expected – it’s how it’s dealt with that is important to me and it’s always been dealt with professionally and quickly
Hopefully I have not just jinxed it and I will be able to stay with them for many more years to come.
Web hosting review sites come in handy when you do need to move to a new host though, they take a lot of the research work out of it for you – I always try to find sites that offer reviews and ratings from real people as well, it’s one thing reading ‘facts’ about what someone claims to offer, it’s another actually hearing what it’s customers have to say.
